Observatory with wild salmon from the Lærdal river

Observe wild salmon and sea trout in the river currents underneath the waterfall. You can almost touch the large salmon!

The wild salmon observatory

The fish you observe in the pool have either entered freely from the river through the salmon ladder or they have been caught and released in the pool. In spring (May and parts of June) you may see salmon and sea-trout which have survived the winter in the river. In the summer months of June, July, and August you will observe mostly new fish which have come in from their migration in the ocean and the fjord. In autumn the fish gradually put on their spawning colours - the spawner (the female fish) turns dark, whereas the milter (the male fish) is tinged with red. In late autumn you can observe how the female fish prepares the spawning by "digging" in the river-bed gravel, and how the dominant male fish chases away his "competitors".
